Oprah had a show the other day dedicated to "going green" and recycling. Optimism is nice to have but reality allows one to face pitfalls in theories. The discussed of the many ways people can cut back on waste on recycle what they use. But it is my opinion that it wont work. Why? People are all about convenience. There are three things that motivate people to do anything. 1) They will get paid for their work. 2) It will get them sex. 3) They will be given alcohol or drugs for their work. 4) if they "don't do the task, it will lead to their immediate death. Only the best of humanity will make an all out effort to separate cans, glass, plastic and paper and take them all the way to the recycling center.
30 years ago when I was a boy there use to be paper drives. Trucks use to drop off bins which people drove to and put their old papers in. Than the service was dropped because of cost.
Students and engineers have made Ingenius designs in solar energy and homes that benefit the ecosystem, but Government and Builders don't see them as an affordable design for society yet. So what will it take to use or do things that will make a better World? Most likely the brink of death or enough people die in an area an effort is then put forth.
But despite mankind's greatest efforts, the Earth will cease to support life. Either by man's hand or a natural catastrophe. War, an Asteroid, Disease, the Sun burning to hot are a few examples. Someday the race of men will end.
Humanity has but one choice and that is to learn how to travel and inhabit other planets. To learn how to terraform the land and atmosphere. We already have an idea of how to do these things. Space in the new frontier as the West was when Columbus first discovered it in the 1400s. New land, new hope, new culture and a new way of living.
